#SUNYCIT: Digital Badges for Professional Development

My first SUNY Conference on Instruction and Technology (CIT) breakout session began with a short video on badges. Jennifer Snyder from SUNY Center for Professional Development (CPD) provided an overview of digital badges and how they were using them at the SUNY level to support professional development.

Digital Badges

CPD and other SUNY entities are using digital badges to support professional development.

They use Credly.com to issue their badges. It is the same program that the TEI team uses.

Presently, CPD is using badges for academic programs and conference attendance. For the 2017 SUNY CIT conference, they handed out three different badges:

  • CIT 2017 Attendee
  • CIT 2017 Presenter
  • CIT 2017 Networking (you had to network with three new people)

Snyder shared that badges can be used to put non credit items on a resume. To increase credibility, the name of the issuer does matter.

Finally, badges can encourage a deep dive on a topic.

If you are interested in using badges to support your program, come talk with me in the TEI Synergy Center.
